Pretty Polly Stakes (Group 1) / The Curragh, 06.27.09 / Race Recap
PROS
- A quality lineup for this Group 1 contest drew a trio of top class 4-year-old fillies all with Group 1 form. They were headed by 2008 Epsom Oaks winner Look Here (also third to Conduit in the St Leger) who had been narrowly denied by Ask on her reappearance in the Coronation Cup (G1), plus Lush Lashes — a triple Group 1 winner last year — and Dar Re Mi, one of the few to give the great Zarkava a race at Longchamp last year.
CONS
- Rain beforehand had turned the ground quite sticky and runners came up the centre to stands side of the course; as a result the race became a steadily-run tactical affair and certainly didn’t suit closers Lush Lashes (who might have also found the ground too soft) and Look Here. The presence of a 25/1 outsider in second position — beaten just a short-head — also makes the form look suspect.
BOTTOM LINE
- Winner Dar Re Mi might be considered a shade fortunate, as she was given a brilliant tactical ride from the front end by Jimmy Fortune and she certainly intimidated the runner-up in the final furlong, eventually surviving a stewards inquiry. However, she’s a proven smart filly who demonstrated she has the heart for a battle and can be expected to figure strongly in any of the Turf events. Look Here ran better than her third position suggests, but needs a strong pace at this 10 furlong trip.
