Moyglare Stud Stakes (Group 1) / The Curragh, 08.30.09 / Race Recap

PROS

  • The Moyglare has a long history of producing some top quality fillies and the 2009 renewal saw a fascinating clash between European racing’s two superpowers. Coolmore were represented by Lille Langtry, a filly with a big reputation who had followed up her second place at Royal Ascot with a Group 2 win at Leopardstown, whilst Godolphin fielded the unbeaten Long Lashes, who had won a Group 3 on her second start at Newmarket.

CONS

  • Heavy rain made this race a searching test of stamina over seven furlongs and the big two fillies underperformed as a result, the race being won by a 16/1 shot from a 66/1 Aidan O’Brien-trained outsider (who looked no more than a pacemaker for her stablemate).

BOTTOM LINE

  • Trainer Kevin Prendergast had been worried that Termagant would not be suited by the heavy ground, but the daughter of Powerscourt followed up her debut win with a clear-cut victory. Famous showed she’s a tough sort by finding plenty once under pressure, but surely better can be expected of Lillie Langtry and Long Lashes when they race on a less testing surface.
