Lady’s Secret Analysis

Lady’s Secret Stakes (G1) / Oak Tree at Santa Anita, 10.10.09 / Download Chart (PDF)

PROS

  • Zenyatta is just flat-out better than any filly in North America, besides arguably you-know-who (Rachel Alexandra). The only challenge to this brilliant miss can be tackling the boys in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. She adores the Santa Anita Pro-Ride synthetic and the added distance looks beneficial.

CONS

  • If you’re a “speed figures” disciple, she isn’t as good as Rip Van Winkle. Some would argue that, even though she’s winning, her form is regressing. I’m not sure I buy it.

BOTTOM LINE

  • I don’t blame the connections for diving right back into the Ladies’ Classic and retiring this brilliant mare as one of the best of all time; joining Bayakoa as the only mare to win back-to-back Distaffs (er, Ladies Classic’s). On the other hand, if they want to even make Horse of they Year an argument, they need to enter on Saturday and beat the boys. Tough call.

In hindsight, you’re a wise man Tim. You didn’t go too far to the left and too far to the right. You stayed neutral with your comments (above) and your wisdom told you that Zenyatta is not about “the figures.”

What the east coasters failed to realize about Zenyatta is this:

Zenyatta’s numbers seem to be declining and it appeared that Zenyatta was tailing off.

This couldn’t of been further from the truth.

All year, Zenyatta’s opposition was trying “anything” and “everything” to slow the pace.

East coast writers failed to realized this and now their pockets are empty after the racemare Zenyatta powered home to win the “2009 Breeders Cup Classic”!
